Network gateways perform a variety of tasks. They forward data packets between networks (routing), translate between different network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, IPX/SPX), and can provide security features such as firewalls and NAT (Network Address Translation). NAT hides your network's internal IP addresses from the internet, increasing security. Gateways can also act as proxy servers, filter and control traffic, or implement Quality of Service (QoS) rules to prioritize certain traffic (e.g., video streaming). They are therefore essential components for complex network infrastructures.
